Glossary of Terms

  • Advanced Search Syntax: Boolean terms or operators that when used help you form a complex search qurery to bring back better, more relevant results.

  • Date Words: a Word Group containing search words that help you return web pages containing information addressing the identified period of time

  • Domain Words: a Word Group containing search words with advanced sytax that allow you to zero in and focus on web pages from specific sources of information. You can either exclude or eliminate web pages from specific domains (such as commercial domains or dot com's), or you can specifically focus or include web pages from specific domains (such as organizations or government agencies, e.g., .org's, and .gov's).

  • Invisible Web: specialized search databases not often indexed by serach engine spiders

  • Learning Words: a Word Group containing search words that when added to a search query helps you bring back web pages that contain particularly useful, relevant, educational and helpful information

  • Location Words: a Word Group containing search words that help you bring back web pages containing information about the identified geographic location

  • Money Words: a Word group that contains search words associated with money or financial aid that when added to a search query return web pages containing that specific search word. Money words include the search words: scholarships, internships, assistantships, investment capital, venture capital, etc.
  • Phrase and Concept Searching: Some word groups contain search words with a complete and common phrase. This set of search words can be quickly added to a query to retrun web pages containing that phrase.
  • Search Builder: a specialized online tool that help you select the right search words and create a good search query

  • Search Engine: the online software that looks for information at a website, and usually returns links to pages containinmg the desired content

  • Search Query: the sequence or string of words entered at a search engine

  • Word Group: a key word and it's synonyms and related words, which is used to identify keywords that when used in a query return web pages containing valuable results. Using Word Groups is particularly useful when you want to research a field of knowledge. There are an unlimited number of Word Groups, but searching using the key words within a word group allows you to find the most relevant information on a specific topic of information.

  • Word Type: A characteristic of a group of search words that when used return web sites that exhibit that characteristics. The seven key types of word types are:

      subject - usually a noun
      actions - usually a verb
      features - a descriptor, usually an adverb or an adjective
      knowledge - a characteristic of the web site returned
      date - a temporal characteristic of the web site returned
      location - a characteristic of the web site returned
      domain - the type of source of the web site returned


  • There are other potential word types that may be identified and used when searching for valuable information.
